Sump Pump Repair & Installation in Delaware, OH

Keep Your Basement Dry

In central Ohio, the sump pump does more work than almost anything else in the house, and most people don't think about it until it stops. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Delaware repairs, replaces and upgrades sump pumps across Delaware and Union counties, and adds battery backups so a storm that knocks out the power doesn't take your basement with it.

We're The Punctual Plumber. If we're late, we pay you $5 a minute, up to $300.

Sump Pump Services We Offer

Sump Pump Repair

Pump running nonstop, not turning on, making a grinding noise, or tripping the breaker? We find the cause, whether it's a stuck float switch, a bad check valve, a clogged intake or a worn-out motor, and fix it on the spot when we can.

Sump Pump Replacement

Most sump pumps last 7 to 10 years, and many fail without warning. We replace worn-out pumps with a properly sized submersible or pedestal unit, a new check valve, and a discharge line that carries water away from the foundation.

Battery Backup Sump Pumps

Heavy storms and power outages tend to show up together. A battery backup pump takes over when the power goes out or the main pump fails, and many models sound an alarm so you know something is wrong. For a finished basement, we consider this a must.

New Sump Pit Installation

If your basement takes on water and you don't have a sump pit, we can install a new basin and pump in the right spot.

Discharge Lines and Downspouts

Water pumped out of the basement needs somewhere to go. If your discharge line or buried downspouts are clogged, frozen or dumping water right back at the foundation, the pump ends up moving the same water over and over. We clear, repair and reroute these lines.

Signs Your Sump Pump Needs Service

  • It runs constantly, or cycles on and off every few seconds
  • It hums but doesn't pump water
  • Loud grinding, rattling or clanking
  • Water in the basement after a storm
  • Visible rust, or a float that sticks
  • No battery backup, or a backup battery more than 3 to 5 years old
  • The pump is more than 7 years old

Why Sump Pumps Matter So Much Here

Heavy clay soil. Much of Delaware and Union counties sits on dense clay that drains slowly. After a hard rain or a spring thaw, water collects around the foundation and finds its way into the drain tile and the sump pit. Your pump has to keep up.

Finished basements. A lot of homes in Powell, Lewis Center, Sunbury and Delaware have finished lower levels with carpet, drywall and furniture. One failed pump during a storm can mean thousands of dollars in damage and a messy insurance claim.

Storms and power outages. Our biggest storms often bring outages with them, which is exactly when a pump without a backup stops. For a finished basement, a battery backup costs far less than one cleanup.

Protect Your Basement Year-Round

  • Test your pump every few months: pour a bucket of water into the pit and make sure it kicks on and drains.
  • Check that the discharge line outside is clear, especially after a freeze.
  • Keep downspouts connected and draining well away from the house.
  • Replace the backup battery every 3 to 5 years.
  • Have the pump inspected before spring rain and snowmelt. Club members get it checked at their annual inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a sump pump last?

Most last 7 to 10 years. Pumps that run often, like in a high water table or clay soil, can wear out sooner. If yours is past 7 years old, plan on replacing it before it fails rather than after.

Do I really need a battery backup?

If your basement is finished or you store anything down there you care about, yes. The storms that fill your sump pit are the same storms that knock out the power, and a primary pump can't run without it.

Why does my sump pump run when it hasn't rained?

In clay soil with a high water table, groundwater can keep flowing into the pit for days after a storm. A pump that runs constantly with no rain can also mean a stuck float, a failed check valve letting water flow back in, or a discharge line that's recirculating water. We can tell you which.

Can my sump pump drain into the sewer or laundry sink?

In most communities, no. Sump water should go outside or to a storm drain, not into the sanitary sewer. We'll route the discharge the right way.

What should I do if my sump pump fails during a storm?

Check the breaker and outlet first, and make sure the float isn't stuck. If the pit is filling and the pump won't run, call us at (740) 520-2665. We answer 24/7. Move valuables off the floor in the meantime.

Should I replace my sump pump before it fails?

Yes, if it's more than 7 to 10 years old or shows warning signs. A planned replacement costs far less than drying out a flooded basement.
