The Local Water
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities runs three facilities off Salem Lake and the Yadkin River with an output of 91 million gallons a day. The utility says their numbers met or beat all state and federal requirements in 2025. There are public health safeguards before the water hits the distribution system, but after that it is on its own through miles of infrastructure and your private plumbing. That is where we come in with our full range of filtration, repair and softening services to give you control over what comes out of your fixtures.
Hardness and Filtration
Around here you might assume a softener is de rigueur. In fact, with an average of 17.5 ppm (anywhere from 9 to 28), for those on city water, the water is quite soft. A conventional softener is not always what a local home needs on city water. But those with wells serving their home, that water is almost always at a level where a softener is warranted. On filtration, some would rather put in a filtration system to handle the 1.02 ppm of chlorine the utility puts in to stave off microbes, or other things in the system. We prefer to test the water and make recommendations based on what is actually there and your objectives, not on assumptions.
City Water or Well Water — It Changes the Job
The two sources do not behave the same, so the fix is never the same either. City water arrives already treated, meaning your concerns tend to be about chlorine taste, disinfection byproducts, or whatever picked up on the way through the pipes. Well water is untreated from the start, so it can carry hardness, iron, sulfur, sediment, or bacteria depending on what your particular ground source looks like. That is why we do not sell a one-size-fits-all system. We test the water coming into your specific home, city or well, and build the setup around that chemistry, not a generic package.
What to Put in Your Home
There is a use for every type of system. Whole-house units are handy for treating the water as it comes in; point-of-use is better for the kitchen. Reverse osmosis is favored by many for cooking and drinking since it gets at dissolved matter and sediment. But the ideal setup depends on the space you have and the maintenance you are prepared for. Filters do wear out and parts require tending. Our people are on hand for resin-bed service, changing filters and fixing control valves.
Then there is the matter of older plumbing. What you see at the faucet is a product of both the plant and your pipes, which is something to bear in mind in some of the older neighborhoods. The utilities also put orthophosphate in for corrosion control. If the water has an odd color or smell, a plumber can take a look at the whole picture to determine if the problem is with the plumbing or the supply.
As for regulations, the Utilities operate under the Safe Drinking Water Act and the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. They also have separate facilities for wastewater from commercial and residential discharge, a process altogether different from what you have in your house.
