Toilet Repair
There is no better way to put a household in disarray than with a toilet that will not flush, one that runs on or constantly backs up. In some cases the problem is straightforward, an internal part has simply failed. But a recalcitrant clog or leak can be more insidious, pointing to plumbing troubles of a deeper nature.

Every part of a toilet has its limits. A flapper in bad condition will let water run all day long, while a deteriorated seal or loose fitting makes a mess of the area around the fixture. Then there is the fill valve that has seen better days and will not allow the tank to fill properly. We are here to handle any of these:
Do not ignore a leak you can see. Even a little water at the base is enough to harm the subfloor and flooring. If the unit rocks under use, the seal is probably gone. Our service extends to the supply line, drain and any nearby connections. Often the toilet itself is fine but a blockage further down the line is the source of the trouble.
An occasional clog is par for the course in any home, but if it is a recurring affair, it needs attention. Gurgling in other fixtures or slow drains point to something more in the system than what can be fixed by clearing the bowl.
Age is also a factor. In West Salem you will find homes from the 19th and early 20th century, and Ardmore was put up in the 1920s. The plumbing in such older properties has been tinkered with over the years. It does not mean the pipes need to be replaced, but a plumber must account for how the old venting and lines are performing.
You do not often find hard-water scale to be the cause of a toilet’s demise in this area. The figures are telling: Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities’ 2025 report shows an average hardness of some 17.5 ppm, hardly anything but soft water. A faulty valve or something out of adjustment is a much more probable culprit. And although the utilities add orthophosphate as a corrosion inhibitor, the condition of the plumbing from one house to the next can vary. We prefer to evaluate the fixture in the context of the home as a whole, not in isolation.
We recognize when it is no longer sensible to put more money into an old fixture. A tank or bowl with a crack, or some other persistent trouble, means the piece has to be replaced. That said, we are not in the business of suggesting a new one on the off chance that a repair might be a bother. If there is a practical way to fix it, we will tell you so.
If a new toilet is warranted, our first step is to see that the flange and shutoff valve are up to snuff before we start. Once the old model is out of the way, we will have the new one plumbed to the drain and supply with nothing to allow for leaks or any give in the installation. We finish by running a couple of test flushes to make sure it is working as it should.
The Inspections Division of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County is the authority on permits and North Carolina code for most of the county (High Point, King and Kernersville being their own jurisdictions). A straightforward repair is one matter, but any alterations to the drain system or new piping will require the city’s residential permit.
We know the seasons in Winston-Salem well. An indoor toilet is protected from the elements, but a freeze can ruin a pipe in an exterior wall or crawl space. What appears to be a leak may be a damaged supply valve once we trace it back.
