For the water heater side, we installed a 199,000 BTU Navien tankless water heater with built-in recirculation.

We were also able to run a dedicated hot-water return line through the home's encapsulated crawlspace.

Why We Used a Tankless Water Heater With Recirculation

The homeowner wanted plenty of hot water, but he also wanted hot water to reach distant fixtures faster.

Those are actually two different problems.

A properly sized tankless water heater can provide a continuous supply of hot water instead of storing a limited amount in a tank. But a tankless heater by itself does not make hot water move through the pipes any faster.

That is where hot-water recirculation helps.

A recirculation system keeps hot water moving through the plumbing so there is less waiting at faucets and showers. It can also reduce the amount of water that goes down the drain while you wait for it to get hot.

For this home, we were able to install a dedicated return line and pair it with a tankless unit that already had a recirculation pump built in.
