The city has a strong Mennonite heritage, which has shaped its culture and community character for well over a century.

Newton is also home to Bethel College, Kansas's oldest four-year college, founded in 1887. The city has continued to grow its manufacturing base, with companies such as AGCO, a major agricultural equipment manufacturer, operating a significant facility there.

Fun Fact: Newton holds a unique place in Kansas law enforcement history.
