A water leak in your home is often more serious than an increase in your monthly water bill. If you suspect you have a plumbing problem in your home, follow our leak detection tips to stop a small leak from becoming a big flood.

Non-weather-related water damage is second most common cause of home insurance claims, with the average claim ringing up to about $10,000. That’s a lot of cash — and a lot of damage.

But some keen observation and a few detective skills can help you find a leak before it gets that far.

1. Check Your Bill

If you suspect a leak, examine your water usage for the last several months for any sudden increases. It also helps to compare the current bill to the same month last year, since seasonal differences may account for any higher usage.

2. Weird Smells

Plumbing leaks can cause an increase of mold and mildew in your home. In many cases, the growth starts under cabinets and behind walls where you won’t see it until it’s too late.

However, mold has a very distinct and unpleasant odor. If you smell mold or mildew, especially around sinks and showers, inspect the room thoroughly for potential leaks.

3. New Roommates

Many household pests are attracted to leaking pipes. It’s a quick and easy source of water for rats, mice, silverfish, cockroaches, and other uninvited creatures. If you discover that you have a sudden infestation, check your pipes for possible water leaks.

4. Sound Machine

Many people find the sound of running water soothing, but it isn’t very relaxing when it’s caused by a plumbing leak. You can often detect the location of a leak by carefully listening for the sound of dripping or running water behind counters and walls.

Plumbing professionals often use acoustic devices to find the exact location of a leak so they can deal with it efficiently. Leaking pipes behind walls are particularly problematic.

5. Water Meter Check

If you suspect a plumbing leak, use your water meter to verify that there’s a problem.

1. Turn off all faucets and any appliances that use water, like your washing machine, dishwasher, and ice maker.

2. Check your water meter and write down the number on the dial.

3. Wait an hour and then note down the number on the meter.

4. If the numbers are different, you likely have a leak.

Don’t Wait for Damage

Once you have verified a leak, it’s time to act. Look for puddles around fixtures. If you find puddles, don’t wait to call in a professional. A plumbing leak doesn’t have to add up to extensive water damage if you act with speed.
