Reasons Your Have Cloudy Water

Just about everybody has, at one time or another, noticed cloudy water when filling a glass from a tap. While this is not typically a safety issue, it’s definitely troublesome nonetheless. It’s important that you find the cause so that you know what needs to be done in order to fix the problem. As plumbing professionals we would like to share some tips that will show you what to look for so that you can take whatever action is necessary.

Cloudy Water

Potential Causes

  • Water heater problems – One reason for cloudy water could be that there’s something wrong with your water heater. Over time, deposits of magnesium and calcium can accumulate in the tank, eventually resulting in water that doesn’t look like it should. If this happens in your home, try to refrain from using hot water for cooking or drinking until you have the water heater checked out, because metallic parts inside the tank could also be causing the cloudiness. While you may only need the tank to be drained and cleaned, there is also a chance you’ll need a replacement.
  • Pipe corrosion – If you have cloudy water from both the hot and cold taps, that could be an indication that your pipes are corroding. Try running the cold water tap for a few minutes and see if that will clear the line. If that doesn’t work, you should call a plumber to have your pipes checked out.
  • Municipal water supply issues – There is a chance that the problem could be with the city water supply or the city plumbing lines that connect to your home’s pipes. If this is the case, you may want to consider having a water filtration system installed in your home to be on the safe side.
