Water has always been central to Bel Aire's story, and that's no coincidence. Farmers first settled the area in the 1860s, drawn by the open land on the edge of Wichita. But it wasn't until the early 1950s that the community began to take shape as we know it today. Tom Pearson, a wrestling coach from Oklahoma, purchased land here with plans to farm, but quickly ran into a problem every property owner in the area knew well: reliable water supply. When Pearson approached the City of Wichita to connect to their water system, he was turned away.
That rejection sparked something bigger. In 1955, Pearson and several neighbors petitioned Sedgwick County to establish a local water improvement district, essentially building their own infrastructure from the ground up. It was a fitting beginning for a city that would spend the next three decades fighting for its independence. In the early 1980s, Bel Aire and Wichita went head-to-head in a two-year legal battle over Bel Aire's right to incorporate. The case went all the way to the Kansas Supreme Court, and Bel Aire won.
At the time of incorporation, Bel Aire had fewer than 2,500 residents. The landscape was mostly farmland and wheat fields, and that was exactly the point. Residents had come here for country living with city convenience just down the road. The nearest McDonald's was at 13th and Woodlawn; the closest grocery store was over in Park City. The local teenage hangout was a convenience store called Shopeze at 45th and Woodlawn. It was a tight-knit, self-sufficient community, one that had already proven it could solve its own infrastructure problems when it had to.
Today, Bel Aire has grown into a thriving suburb of Wichita with modern homes, expanding neighborhoods, and all the plumbing demands that come with them. At Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, we're proud to serve a community with such a strong history of knowing the value of good water. Whether you're dealing with hard water buildup, aging pipes in an older home, or need a new water heater installed, we're here 24/7, 365 days a year.

We had an issue with our water pressure, found this company on Angie’s List and had a great experience from the start—the general manager, Don called me back right away, he was professional, and genuinely helpful and set us up with a quick, no-charge diagnostic appointment. The technician, Cam arrived promptly at the set time, he was knowledgeable, professional and completely honest with no upselling whatsoever.
