How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink

The kitchen sink dispenses water, is used for cleaning, and may even serve as waste disposal. However, if it gets clogged, then everything can come to a screeching halt, making it hard to get anything done. Here at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing® of Dallas, we’d like to share a few tips with you for how to unclog a kitchen sink.

Prevention

First of all, it’s a good idea to avoid clogging the drain in the first place, of course. If you do not have an in-sink garbage disposal, do not put solid waste down the sink. Also, try to avoid pouring grease or oils down the sink, because they can solidify and cause clogs.

Plunging

If it’s too late for you, however, here’s how to unclog a kitchen sink: Fill the sink with a few inches of water, and if there are any other openings (such as a double sink), then plug them. Put the plunger over the sink and begin working it up and down until the water begins to drain.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Another option is to use baking soda and vinegar. The fizzing reaction from mixing the two can help to destroy clogs. Pour boiling water down the drain to soften any oils, followed by a cup of baking soda. Next, add a cup of vinegar and plug the sink to contain the reaction. After five or 10 minutes, use more boiling water to flush out the system.

Plumber’s Snake

Finally, you can use a plumber’s snake or bent coat hanger to remove the clog. This works well if the clog is small or close to the opening of the drain, but if not it can be all but impossible for an amateur.
