When the holidays are near, no matter which holiday you're celebrating there are sometimes things you need to worry about with your plumbing. After all, you're going to have a whole to more people in your home and that means all of those people are at some point going to need to use the facilities, right? Or they're going to need to wash their hands or clean off their plates or any number of other things. And that could be a problem for your Sugar Land, TX home.

Offer to Clear Plates

This one may not be so much fun for you but it's definitely going to help save your drains. If you clear the plates from the table and you offer to clean off the plates then you're going to have more control over what goes into the garbage disposal and what goes into the trash. This is an extremely important thing for you to think about. Even though it's a hassle, talk to your partner or your children and make sure your immediate family are the ones doing these things. You know what to do.

Hide Non-flushable Items

If your family uses so-called ‘flushable wipes' but knows not to put them in the toilet make sure you're not risking that with others. Other people in your family might assume that those wipes can be flushed because they say they're safe. You know that they're not, however, so make sure you're putting them somewhere that others aren't going to find them and use them or be very clear about the fact that you do not flush them down your toilet so that no one else will either (your plumber can definitely tell you why).

Install Drain Screens

Put drain screens over all of your drains including the sink in the kitchen and in your shower (if people are going to be staying over). This will make sure nothing is rinsed down the drain that you don't want to be. You can clean these screens whenever you need to and make sure that everything looks good for your guests. You also want to make sure that you put these screens on so they won't slip or move so that they're not a trip hazard and so your guests don't try to move them out of the way when using the shower or sink.

Hide the Chemicals

Many people are tempted to spray a chemical cleaner or some form of chemical when they use the bathroom at another person's house. Keep this to a minimum or eliminate the risk altogether by hiding your chemicals away. This is a good idea anyway since you'll likely have small children in the home and you don't want them to be in danger from those chemicals. Even better, get rid of the chemicals altogether and make sure that you're using only natural products in and around any of your drains. This keeps others from being able to put anything chemical in the drain and keeps you from having to answer to your local plumber.

Turn the Water Off

Going around your house periodically to make sure that all of the water is turned off might be a good idea. You don't want to have to deal with a high water bill and your local plumber will tell you this could be bad for your drains and more. Turning off the water means making sure that taps are fully closed. Most people turn the taps until the water stops and leaves them. You want to make sure you push these taps a little further so they are fully closed and nothing drips out even occasionally. Even a small drip could mean calling your local plumber for help later.

Get Work Done

Before your family and friends come over for the holidays make sure you're getting any work done that needs to be done. Call a plumber to take care of toilets that don't stop running unless you jiggle the handle just right. Call a plumber to clear out drains that take forever to clear or to fix the garbage disposal if it hasn't been working. If you have any sort of plumbing problem you don't want to have to deal with it when other people are in your home. No one wants to call a plumber when they have company.

Lay Down the Rules

If you have specific rules in your home for how and when you use the water make sure you let people know. Talk to the people who are coming over and let them know that you don't like to waste water or if there's anything about your house that's different from normal. So, if you don't fix that toilet handle make sure you let people know about it so they can make sure to get it to turn off. If there's something else you want them to know just tell them. Your friends and family want to respect your rules and your home but they need to know the rules first.

When it comes to having holidays at your house it can seem stressful for a number of reasons. You probably don't even think about calling a plumber but it's an important part of the process. Keeping your plumbing working properly throughout the day or the weekend or however long you're going to have guests for is a very important task and even more than that you want to make sure that you're getting everything taken care of. You want your house to be in as good of shape when everyone leaves as it was before they arrived.
