Rosenberg Plumbers – Unclogging a Shower Drain

Showers and bathtubs are some of the most frustrating items to deal with in a home. One of the main reasons for this is that both are susceptible to clogs. If you ever take a look inside the standard trap in the pipes of showers and bathtubs, it is most often going to be slap slam full of all sorts of gunk, such as, hair, lint, soap scum, and other clogging particulates. These materials can and will eventually cause the shower or bathtub to fill up with water and not drain properly.  In severe scenarios, you could find yourself with a stubborn clog that does not allow water to drain at all. Albeit, reaching out for a professional plumber, below are a few things that you can try to do yourself to help unclog a drain before you call a professional for help.

One of the things you will not want to do, is use any form of chemical liquids that are formulated for unclogging drains.  While these agents, such as Drano, will certainly help clear most traps from minor clogs, they can also damage the plumbing in your home also, leading to even more complicated and costly problems later on down the road. No homeowner wants to deal with extra problems that materialize due to trying to fix one problem. Additionally, coagulants in these chemical liquids could just further push the clog down into the pipes making it even more difficult to remove.

One of the best methods to remove clogs from a drain is to make use of a metal hanger or a plumber’s snake if you have one on hand. It’s worth a shot to say the least and since most of us having metal clothes hangers laying around, it is a simple procedure to do. The first thing that you will want to do is take the hanger and straighten it out. At the end of the wire, form a small hook with your fingers so that it will be able to grab onto any obstructions, such as hair, when you lower it down.

The trap as the name implies, traps any obstructions that finds its way into the pipes and, thus, makes it easier to have them removed, since the trap itself, shouldn’t be more than a couple inches or so below the drain.

First, you will need to remove the mesh cap that is on top of the drain. Most often you can just pop it loose or twist it out, sometimes they may be screwed into place. Once the mesh cap is removed, you may see some debris, such as hair. If so, slowly pull the hair out, and if you are lucky that hair will be attached to the main clog and you may be able to pull the entire clog out by doing so. If not, do not fret, slide the wire, hooked end first into the drain and wiggle it around until you feel like you’ve gotten something on the end.  Slowly, pull the wire out of the drain, and hopefully you will have got a good handful of the obstruction. If so, run a little water so if the drain empties as it should, if not continue again, sliding the wire into the drain and wiggling it around to see if you can grab any more of the obstruction.

If all goes well, you will eventually be able to get all of the obstruction, rather most of it, out of the trap, and the water should drain as intended. If not, you will most likely need professional assistance by getting in touch with a local plumbing company, such as, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing® of Rosenberg for assistance.
