The Science of Plumbing Camera Inspections

One of the most valuable tools used by a Dallas plumber is a video camera. A camera attached to the end of a cable is used to discover problems which exist within a drain or sewer pipe in a home or business too small to see into or is located underground.

There are many benefits of plumbing camera inspections for residential plumbing repairs. At Benjamin Franklin Plumbing® of Dallas, we routinely inspect plumbing issues using state-of-the-art camera technology, and we share our method below.

Accessing the Sewer Line

A drain or sewer pipe in your home is accessed through a clean out located nearby. The pipe is then inspected to see if there is any standing water or a backup. The end of the cable with the camera will then be inserted into the pipe.

Inspection in Two Directions

The entire length of the pipe is viewed by a Dallas plumber on a video display. This camera will be able to find things that could go unnoticed under other circumstances, including tiny or hairline cracks, holes and leaks. Any problems found will be noted for future plumbing repair.

The pipe is inspected from the clean out to the main sewer at the road and back into the home. This will ensure no areas of trouble are missed.

Type of Pipe Problems

Problems that can exist with drain or sewer pipes will vary. The plumber will determine if pipes are blocked with debris or if they have significant grease buildup. As previously stated, small cracks in a sewer or drain pipe can also be found from a plumbing camera inspection.

Type of Plumbing Repairs

The most common repair made to a blocked pipe is a thorough cleaning. This is done by using a rooter or with a hydro jet, which is typically the preferred method to clean a sewer pipe. This process works when water is forced down the sewer pipe at high pressure. The pressure of the water will remove all the grease, debris and other material on the sides of the pipe.

Additionally, if you have trees in your yard, their roots can block a sewer pipe and cause water to back up into your yard, your home or onto the street.
