If you have ever had silicone split behind your bath tub, and you have wondered why, then continue reading to learn why this happens. This problem happens more than it should and this is because of two reasons, the person installing the bath tub should have experience in doing so, if they do not then they will most likely fall into the same mistake as most others. The other problem lies with the manufactures, they give instructions on how to fit the bath tub but they do not mention some of the most important aspects when installing a bath tub.
Just before a bath tub is fitted and put in place, it will require solid wood to be fitted on all of the walls that the bath tub is fitted against. The wood should also be screwed or bolted to the wall to ensure that there is no movement whatsoever. The bath tub should then be placed and leveled on the wood; which should also be level. When leveling the wood, you should never rely on the floor due to the fact that there may actually be changes in the floor during the winter and summer and you must also account for the weight of the bath tub when full also.
Assuming the fact that there will be tiles fitted along the sides of the bath tub and walls around it, it is a good idea before you place the silicone around the edges of the bath tub that you fill it up with cold water first so that it will be at its heaviest weight. Once the tub is full of water then you can apply the silicone around the edges of the bath tub. When doing so, make sure that you are wearing some disposable gloves that are skin tight and wet the finger that is going to be used to spread the silicone evenly unless you have a specific tool that you will be using instead.
Once you have done the above then you should not have to worry about silicone splitting. There are many different types of silicone and not all of them are equal. However, that would be an entirely different article to review the different types that are available at your local hardware store or home improvement center. Some silicone comes with up to 35-year guarantees, but if you are looking for what silicone is best suited for this project then do a quick search on the internet and surely you will find several review guides going over some of the best silicone on the market.
