Water heaters provide essential hot water for the entire household. In the U.S. water heaters are not considered optional, but a necessity for showers, laundry, cleaning, and other household tasks. Being aware of the signs of a developing problem can enable you to call for water heater repair in Sugar Land, potentially before the issue grows larger, and more costly. Warning signs of a developing issue include the following.

One early warning sign is a drop in the temperature of the water. This is likely to indicate the water heater is not achieving the set temperature. The recommended temperature is 120 degrees F. Check the temperature of the thermostat to ensure it hasn’t been turned down, before contacting a licensed plumber. Discolored Water

Rusty water may indicate the need for water heater repair, or replacement. However, if you have galvanized pipes, the rusty water could also be due to the pipe corrosion, and the need for replacement of piping. Draining water from the water heater into a few buckets is a good way to test the source. If rusty water continues to fill the buckets it’s a likely due to the water heater rusting from the inside out, and replacement will be required. Rusty water when you cut the cold water on is a likely indication of corroded galvanized pipes. If you don’t have galvanized piping, then the water heater is the likely source.

If the appearance of rusty colored water is sudden, check with your water supplier. The municipal supplier may be working on a water main, and soil may have entered the water system.

Unusual Noises

While some noise isn’t unusual, strange noises can indicate the need for water heater repair in Sugar Land. You may hear a whine, pop, rumbling, or squeal. These sounds are due to the sediment (mineral deposits due to hard water) that collects on the bottom of the storage tank over time. Water trapped under the sediment is bubbling up, creating noise. Furthermore, the collecting sediment tends to insulate the tank bottom, and cause overheating. The excessive heat in turn can cause the breakage of the glass liner on tanks with this protective feature. Once the glass liner is broken, water contacts the metal tank, which rusts through from the inside out.

Repair vs. Replace

Age is a factor to consider in the decision to repair or replace. If the water heater is 7 years old or older, replacement is the best option. Other reasons to replace a water heater are when the costs of water heater repair in Sugar Land is 50% or more of the cost of a new appliance. A new water heater will provide greater reliability and energy efficiency.

Leaks may be due to a leaky fitting or pipe. However, when the leak is from the tank, replacement is required.

Water Heater Maintenance

Routine flushing of the water heater will assist to maintain performance, and extend its lifespan. Once a full flush is provided, you can remove 2 – 3 quarts every 2 – 3 months at the drain valve to remove sediment. However, if you are unable to provide this service, a Benjamin Franklin Plumber can provide a professional flush for you.
