The International Plumbing Code was introduced by the International Code Council to try and standardize many of the regular and day to day plumbing methods and fittings. While it is mainly in use in America, it has been used as the basis for plumbing codes for several other countries.

Fixtures & Fittings

If there were no standardized fittings, you could be held to ransom by the manufacturer of whatever system that you have; only being able to buy parts specific to them. A by-product of that would see manufacturing costs soar, with the inevitable result of the consumer having to bear the brunt of those costs.

Methods

Adhering to a strict standard means that all plumbing & heating systems should be (in theory) fairly similar to each other. That means that fitting costs are reduced and diagnosing any problem should also be easier; if the installer knows how the system has been fitted, it allows for a speedier diagnosis.

Safety

Not only does the code apply to standardized fittings and methods, but it further enhances safety of the general public, covering such subjects as anti-scald devices, water heaters and backflow prevention methods are just a few of the topics covered.

Knowledge

Of course, a good understanding of the International Plumbing Code is just another facet to a professional plumber; further evidence that your chosen contractor knows what they are doing and that any parts that they fit, will be compatible with the rest of the commercial market.
