How To Stop Running Toilets

Stop running toilet

A running toilet is annoying and typically due to one of three components. A Benjamin Franklin Plumbing plumber can provide the toilet repair, installation or maintenance you need for your home’s plumbing in Sugar Land.

The Flapper Chain

Inspect the chain connecting the handle to the flapper in the bottom of the tank. When too tight it can keep the flapper valve raised, allow water to continuously run into the bowl and causing the tank to refill repeatedly. You can loosen it by a few links until the flapper valve can properly seat. In addition, the chain may have excess slack in it, allowing the chain to fall under the flapper valve, and causing water to leak into the bowl and the tank to continuously refill. Tighten the chain by a few links until the valve can close properly. Our plumbers can provide the service you require for your plumbing in Sugar Land.

The Fill Valve

The fill valve contains a float that controls the amount of water delivered to the tank. As the water level rises, so does the float until it shuts the water off when the float reaches a certain level. Over time hard water and wear will cause the fill valve to malfunction, resulting in water entering the tank that leaves through the overflow tube.  When water overflows into the tube, adjust the fill valve until the water level is approximately an inch below the tube’s top, or replace the fill valve. Some fill valves have a screw or clip adjustment, otherwise replacement is the best option. The Flapper Valve

A worn flapper valve can allow water  to leak into the bowl. Use a few drops of food coloring in the tank to identify this problem. Check the bowl about 20 minutes later. If the color is in the bowl, the flapper valve is not properly seating. Replacement of the flapper valve will take care of the problem. It is wise to monitor for a leaking toilet, both inside and outside the toilet. When the tank or bowl leaks, it places your home at serious risk for damage to the structure and/or the foundation. Each time you clean the toilet check for cracks, including hairline cracking. Minor cracks that look like hairs can complete cracking at any time. Replace a toilet with evidence of cracking to prevent damage to your home.
