Early Signs of a Slab Leak

Many homes nationwide are built on a slab foundation. For the most part, there are few problems with slab, but the risk of slab leaks, particularly in areas where rain is prevalent, can be very high.

A slab leak, by definition, is a crack in the pipes that creates a water leak within the foundation of a building. Slab leaks can cause very serious damage; therefore, slab leak detection and knowing what to look for is extremely important for all homeowners. Early detection can save you plenty of money on repair work. It also can steer you away from all kinds of frustration.

Here are three easy tips that will help you detect the early-warning signs of a slab leak:

  • Check your statement: The biggest change may be on your water bill. If your bill is abnormally high or becomes abnormally high in a two- or three-month span, you may want to have a plumber check for a slab leak.
  • Listen for the water: Keep an ear out for the sounds of running water, primarily in places where you know water shouldn’t be running. Have you home checked out if you hear water running, but faucets are not running.
  • Feel the “hot spots”: If you notice a spot on your floor that’s a little warmer than a spot not too far from where you’re standing, this could be a tell-tale sign of a slab leak. Many experts call these “hot spots,” and they basically help to identify where water leaks are the strongest.
