Two Sinks or Not Two Sinks? That is the Question

Kitchen remodels tend to be major undertakings, but well worth the trouble when cooking and entertaining goes from being a chore to being a joy. New appliances and countertops can transform the feel of the room, and a new layout of cabinets and islands can improve the flow of your cooking experience. But there’s one perk that not all homeowners think to add: a second kitchen sink.

It might seem like an extravagance, but a second sink can give you space and functionality where you need it most.

One for the Grub, One for the Scrub

Every good chef can take a clean-as-you-go approach to cook, but that doesn’t usually extend to scrubbing pots and pans -- some tasks just need to wait until after dinner is in the oven. And if those dirty dishes go into your kitchen’s only sink, where will you wash your fruits and vegetables or drain your pasta?

With a second sink, you’ll always have a place to do both. And you can even plan your new kitchen’s workflow around the dual sinks -- the prep sink can be in a kitchen island where there’s room to work and stove access a few steps away, while the dish sink can be near the plate and glass cabinets to help make cleanup a breeze.

And if you tend to have two cooks working in the kitchen at the same time, adding a second sink can go a long way toward avoiding accidental collisions and ensuring everyone has the space they need.

The Right Sink in the Right Place

There’s no reason why both of your kitchen sinks should be the same -- in fact, it may make sense for them to be drastically different. If you have lots of large pots and pans to clean, a deeper, wider dish sink can make those jobs so much easier. The same goes for filling large pots of water.

Your prep sink could then be quite a bit smaller, which will help you maximize the nearby counter space. This is also the ideal place to install a garbage disposal, as it’s just inches from where you’ll be slicing and dicing.

As for the location of each sink, that’s usually a question best left to the interior designers. But you’ll want to consider the areas you use most often, as well as your kitchen’s best features:

  • Kitchen with a view: Have a spectacular view out of one of your kitchen windows? Make sure there’s a sink positioned underneath so you can take in the scenery while cooking or cleaning.

  • Hit the bar: If you plan on having a drink prep area of your remodeled kitchen, you may as well make it a wet bar with a sink sized just-right for washing glasses.

  • A cookie monster’s dream: Avid bakers may want a little corner of the kitchen all to themselves for rolling out dough and filling up baking sheets. Definitely include at least a small sink when designing your new baking station.
