Press Release

Presidents are particular about their plumbing.

02/13/14

For Presidents Day 2014, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing® offers these plumbing facts about our nation’s leaders and their bathrooms.

(Sarasota, FL) – The bathroom is often considered one of the most important rooms in the house. At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the address for the White House, the bathroom seems to be a top priority as well. There are 35 bathrooms here and the lovely lavatory seems to hold a distinguished place in history. For Presidents Day, ponder these presidential plumbing picks:

  • Running water was piped into the White House in 1833.
  • Franklin Pierce, the 14th president, made improvements to the White House bathrooms. He installed a bathroom on the second floor. It was considered luxurious having both hot and cold water. Before 1853 bathing on the second floor required portable bathtubs and water had to be hauled up in kettles from the east wing bathing room.
  • For President Abraham Lincoln running water for washing came in from the Potomac River.
  • President William Howard Taft weighed more than 330 pounds and had difficulty getting out of his bathtub. He had a huge, seven foot long tub installed.
  • The room considered the living room or president’s den is a mini-suite with a bathroom. Lyndon Johnson installed such a powerful shower nozzle here that Richard Nixon later said it nearly flung him out of the stall.
